What happens when altruism invades economy ?

well am no economics geek here !..but yeah i do know the concept of dynamic equilibrium where every system after ceratin time 'stabilizes'
hmmm well the other day during lunch at can A ,this thought struck me!...the tv was running live reports on bird flu..and they said "now the non-vegetarians are turning thier tastes more towards geese and ducks and other such meat..as chickens for now are a definite no!"
i wondered so obviosly these other vendors will take advantage of what is known as the 'market situation or timing' and raise the prices of thier wares. So obviously the low income groups who survive on cut-throat expenses are gonna be deprived of thier share of meat.Well thats a 'event -cause ' relationship, now deem it that these vendors are being very greedy. They grab oppurtunities during a time when the nation is suffering a calamity?!!
So lets assume wat would happen in a utopia? the world filled with good samaritans and angels from heaven, well men would 'not' increase the prices ,infact these vendors would sell thier stuff at same or might be some real 'goody-goody' guy would even lower the prices!!
and wat happens if so.? the world becomes a better place to live? well on the contrary NO..we mess up things further!
who compensates for the losses that the nation suffers in chicken sales? how do we revive economy if all are being good and not helping the goverment revive ?
so ? is altruism a boon or doom to economy?
p.s- am not an economist , i jus luv it ..so ur critical comments are utmost welcome!

We live in a bad bad world

They grab oppurtunities during a time when the nation is suffering a calamity?!!

quacks were selling worthless medicine claimin they were vaccine for bird flu.. talk abt exploitation of the poor and ignorant folk!

about altruism and economy:

well.. considering the demand for substitutes of chicken (meat or whatever im a pure veg!) is gonna be really high -

if the prices go up then the supply will b more(or thats wat i used to think after attending a few economics classes) and ppl will still b forced to buy -> so demand's gonna be more -> and there may be a reduction of price. sort of balances out. revenue's good; ppl get wat they want; everyone's happy :)

if the price is REDUCED then no doubt the demand's gonna go soaring high which eventually CANNOT be met. bad for the revenue; bad for the meat lovers

so altruism unfortunately does not figure in economy and definitely not anywhere in the way business and markets work

ps: that was an amateur's attempt at applying the fundas of economics so i mayb completely off the track!

hmm tatz interestin u bought in supply-demand fact of economics!
somethin i dint think of!
but wat mostly happens is tat under these conditions its generally a 'sellers market' remeber that in economics?!!
ppl 'have to' buy.so irrespective of availabilty..prices r high!!
hmm again i might be wrong..but kewl way ..kudos!

ofcourse govt compensates for every chicken being culled, it's all over in practise. may be at places, one ought to get his farm insured!
